Why Sea Gyro is chosen by experienced sailor
The designer and developer (with 60 years with boats and sailing) believes firmly in the KIS principle (KEEP IT SIMPLE).
Sea Gyro believes that:
a. Most parts should be obtained“off the shelf” and be commercially available.
b. Services can be done by the owner or a local marine mechanic.
c. The Sea Gyro should not be complicated to understand or operate.
Most of Sea Gyro’s parts can be serviced or replaced within the vessel.
In fact some gyros supplied to the boating industry need to have the flywheel assembly removed to undertake simple repairs. They require special tools and parts to service their machines, and specially trained mechanics.
The benefits of the Sea Gyro design
The horizontally spinning flywheel.
The benefits include:
a. Only a two bearing arrangement which are simple to service. It is well known that bearings prefer to run in the horizontal plan.
b. Can use spherical roller bearings, which are the workhorse in industry. These bearings are greased and do not required the use of an oil pump
c. Provides spaced for overmounted electric motors
d. The flywheel can easily be inspected, tested and re-balanced if necessary
e. The design can allow a larger flywheel for a given space.
Commercial electric motors.
a. Readily available in all countries.
b. Multiple motors running independently to provide redundancy.
c. Easier to replace a smaller 2.2kw motor than a single 5.5kw motor in the engine room because of space restrictions and weight.
d. Better heat distribution
Energy efficient.
Power on a vessel is always limited. Sailors should compare a Sea Gyro's power requirements to any other gyro total power requirements (including water pumps).
Air cooled design.
No worries about sea water pumps and sea cock blockages. No water cooled bearings or motors. Just simplicity.
Standard VFD drive and display.
Press start to run and stop. Flywheel spin RPM can be adjust the suit the current sea state. Simple to operate.
Others
Multiple damper system giving less stress to the machinery and vessel.
Robust slewring base that supports the gyro and allows for smooth precession.
Flywheel design with double webs. Less shaft stress. Sea Gyro is the only manufacturer using double web flywheel design.
Design criterias include a high FOS structure with a moderately spun flywheel.
